A Twisted Girl’s Take on Love, Dating and Zodiac Signs

Manila Bay Summer Sunsets

The reason why I didn’t opt to study college in another city is a romantic one: I didn’t want to miss the sunsets that I heard so much about when I was younger and living in another province. With or without someone with me, I used to hang out at hotel rooftops and pool decks, or along the Manila Bay during late afternoon to witness the most romantic and sentimental 10 minutes of my day.

I always brought a sketch pad and crayons to draw my daily sunset; I called it my ‘Sunset Diary”, which was a secret I kept, because I didn’t draw too well for it to be considered an artwork. I used to go daily as my dorm was only a few blocks away from the bay. I noticed that the more jaded I became about things, the less I frequented the sunset strip. And soon, even writing something in my sunset diary seemed corny somehow.

Last week, I had the opportunity to witness the Manila Bay sunset again. I spent the full 10 minutes mentally kicking myself for not bringing my camera, all the while trying not to blink so that I wouldn’t miss the dynamically changing colors erupting on the horizon as the sun went down.

Morphing the old cliche, “stop and smell the roses”, I now remind myself daily to “stop and watch the sun set”, in the hope of regaining the same idealism that made me draw the sun kissing the water on a daily basis, a decade ago.

    For me, I have always liked sun rise or sun set. However, I have not been able to witness one that is breath-taking yet. The few time when I had the opportunities, the sky was too gloomy to give any proper view of the sun. It reminds me of one of my favorite quotation, “When the sky is the darkest, it means that soon the day will break! Press on!”

    :D I love sunrise too, but it’s a bit sinister to me, like the sun’s sleepily getting ready for a day of mischief… sunsets are like the sun’s waving a tearful farewell after a day of mischief…

    XD

    I would love to see some photos from your fortress of solitude. I can’t see the sun set from my balcony but I do get to see great sunrises just before my morning jog, rather inspiring and it really motivates me. I will setup and share a few pics over the comming days.

    i love sunsets, too, but my personal thing when i was younger was stargazing. although i never got to figure out the constellations, i still can’t help but be awestruck when confronted by a dark sky blanketed with thousands of stars.

    Really? It would be nice to see pictures of the sunrise or sunset taken in Japan. ^^ Thanks.

    @drclaire
    Stargazing was also a hobby of mine when I was younger. I’ve always regarded Astrology as the science, not Astronomy, regardless of what my teacher told me. LOL.

    Hi those are magnificent sunsets. I haven’t had the chance to see the Manila Bay sunset since we lived far 2 hours away(including the traffic) from Manila… I would definitely make an effort when we are back in the Philippines. Thanks for sharing and also your sweet words in my tribute post to my father is greatly appreciated.

    Those are gorgeous sunsets…I love being able to catch one - I am not lucky enough to be by the beach, but they can be just as pretty in many other places as well!

    Thanks sis… and thank YOU for sharing it. It made realize just how much my dad supported me through the years. He’s probably the only one who will still be proud of me and cheer me on even if I took a job that involves running naked and bald all over the metro. :D (sorry for the mind graphics that might’ve inflicted lol)

    @Jena
    Drawing is the hardest part, particularly if your hands dont follow what your mind actually sees. :D Thanks!

    @Chelle
    A beautiful view of the whole thing is accessible over balconies and on skyscraper rooftops yes. But the reflection on the water is priceless. :D
